Barry Shawgo of Columbus was the AAF D5 Governor in 2008 and is currently the District Treasurer.
Q. Where do you work and what do you do?
A. I am Vice President of Sales for SalesFuel, Inc. We provide business intelligence for media sales and advertising professionals via a web-based research platform. I’ve been with the company nine years.
Q. Why did you want to be part of AAF? What value does AAF bring to you as an individual and to your business?
A. I joined AAF to give back to an organization that has benefited me tremendously throughout my career. I received a student scholarship from my local AAF club in high school. I learned so much from being a participant in the National Student Advertising Competition in college and a contact I made at an AAF luncheon helped me get my first professional job. I have reaped so many benefits from being part of AAF and I hope to be able to repay some of those rewards by serving.
Q. Which is your local AAF chapter?
A. I’ve been a member of AAF Columbus since moving to Columbus in 1986. I served on the AAF Columbus board for many years and was President in 2001.
Q. Why did you decide to become a District leader?
A. I joined the District board to serve at a level beyond my local club. It’s been fascinating to see how this organization works on a regional and national level. I’ve made wonderful friends along the way.
Q. What are your responsibilities on the D5 board and what are your goals?
A. I oversee the District’s financials. My goal is always to put more money in our account than we take out and make sure we are responsible stewards of the money entrusted to us by each member of every local club in District 5.
Q. How does D5 bring value to the members in our District?
A. D5 is the voice of the local clubs in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia to the national organization. We are responsible for both the National Student Advertising Competition and the American Advertising Awards competition at the District level. We also provide experience and advice to help our local clubs succeed.
Q. What do you do in your free time?
A. I enjoy relaxing with friends and family and spending every minute I can with my wife and our three beautiful daughters.
